  1. Canadian Western Natural Gas Co., Ltd., Calgary, Alberta (Canada)

Canadian Western Natural Gas (CWNG), like most U.S. and Canadian gas distribution utilities, was slow to adopt electrofusion for joining polyethylene pipe, but after extensive evaluation the company has approved the fusion method for difficult tie-ins and repairs. Company experiments with the fusion process started in the mid-1980s. Documentation since then has shown the technique to provide quality joining with economic benefits, particularly where smaller excavations are necessary. CWNG serves some 310,000 customers in 115 Southern Alberta communities including the major urban centers of Lethbridge and Calgary. The gas system includes production and storage facilities, high pressure transmission pipe lines and stations, and urban and rural distribution networks. Part 1 of the series highlighted CWNG's history with plastic pipe, conventional and electrofusion processes and electrofusion history. Part 2 looks at training time, versatility, equipment maintenance and applications such as repairs, tie-ins and new construction.
