A method for the synthesis of fluorine-18 labelled N-fluorolactams by reaction with dilute fluorine-18 in freon has been developed. Chemical yields range from 33-79%. Fluorination of a number of Grignard reagents with these fluorolactams has also been achieved, with yields ranging as high as 51%. The reaction of the fluorolactams with Grignard reagents is mild, regiospecific, and facile.
