Title: Failure and acoustic-emission response of plasma-sprayed ZrO2-8 wt% Y2O3 coatings

Journal Article · · Ceram. Eng. Sci. Proc.; (United States)

An acoustic emission (AE) examination was conducted for the failure of ZrO2-8 wt% Y2O3 plasma-sprayed coatings incorporated in a tensile-adhesion test arrangement. The AE generated during failure is related to the cracking process, and both are in turn related to fracture morphology. The production of AE count rate distribution changes by heat treatment of the coating may be interpreted in terms of the morphological features of the coating. Insight into the adhesion mechanism of plasma-sprayed coatings is gained through the study of the relationship of the bond strength test results to AE and fracture behavior.
