Title: Single cell protein from wood pulp waste as a feed supplement for lactating cows

Journal Article · · J. Dairy Sci.; (United States)

Twenty-four Holstein cows were assigned to one of three rations at the beginning of their first or second lactation and were kept on the rations for 16 wk. Rations differed only that a single cell protein material marketed under the name RayPro (ITT Rayonier, Inc., trademark) was substituted for cottonseed meal at 0, 3, and 7% (dry matter) of the total ration. Crude protein analyses were 15.6, 15.9, and 16.5% for rations containing 0, 3, and 7% RayPro. Rations were composed of 50% concentrate, 25% chopped alfalfa hay, and 25% corn silage dry matter. Milk fat percentages were 3.2, 3.6, and 3.7% for rations with 0, 3, and 7% RayPro. Cows fed the ration containing 7% RayPro had higher rumen ammonia (6.0, 5.9, 8.1 mg/dl) and higher urea in blood plasma (12.7, 14.9, 16.3 mg/dl) than cows fed the 0 and 3% RayPro rations. RayPro is an acceptable substitute for conventional protein supplements in amounts used in this trial when fed as part of a completely mixed ration. 12 references, 2 tables.
