Title: EPA in disarray: muzzling the watchdog

Journal Article · · Wash. Mon.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5927514

The average American's exposure to toxic industrial chemicals could double in the next 10 years as the chemical industry expands and chemicals continue to collect and concentrate in the environment because the administration plans to throw away needed environmental regulations along with the unneeded and ill-advised ones. The plan favors short-term economic gains for industry over long-term health and safety considerations. Budget cutbacks are eliminating funds for inspectors and increasing the risks of illegal dumping which accounts for an estimated 80% of chemical wastes. The author feels that Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Director Ann Gorsuch, who brings no knowledge of chemistry or administration to the job, will halt funding for dump cleanups and delay the implementation of pollution regulations despite polls which show the public wants them to proceed.
