Characteristics of groundwater and lead geochemistry along the Sandy Creek, Ohio

The Sandy Creek is about 65 km in length. It is a tributary of the Tuscarawas River, which flows into the Ohio River. The valley of Sandy Creek is filled with sediments as deep as 70 m and as wide as 2 km. The bedrock valley walls consist of the Allegheny Formation of the Pennsylvanian System. Groundwater samples were collected from active wells in the valley. Recharge to the buried valley aquifer comes from groundwater in the valley wall stream infiltration and precipitation. The total dissolved solids are generally less than 500 ppm but could be as high as 2,000 ppm. The Ca/Mg ratio stays between 2.6 and 7.5, which is similar to those of the limestones in the bedrock valley walls. Bicarbonate is the major anionic species which ranges from 98 to 580 ppm. Sulfate varies between 2.5 and 334 ppm and chloride from 1.9 to 753 ppm. Major cations are Ca and Na with significant amounts of Mg and K. The concentration of Pb varies within a small range from 1.2 to 5.1 ppb. The Pb concentration is related to bicarbonate anion concentrations when sulfate is low. Acid mine drainage appears to be the major sulfate carrier. It reduces the bicarbonate concentration and adds additional Pb and Fe as it joins the groundwater in the valley. High chloride concentrations can be traced to areas with salt storage or petroleum brine disposal. High chloride concentrations are always marked by high Na concentrations and high Na/K ratios, but not other anions and cations. High nitrate concentrations can be traced to areas with intensive agricultural activities. It is not marked by sympathetic changes in other ion concentrations.
