Energy conservation retrofit
Describes an HVAC case history for a major office building in which retrofit included conversion to VAV, temperature reset, and microprocessor control. Energy use problems prior to retrofit included: equipment ran when spaces served were not in use; terminal reheat systems serving the core of the building and data center were excessive energy users; all major air handlers shared a common mixed air plenum which resulted in excessive heating and cooling costs because each air handler had different requirements for outside and return air; and existing air handler control systems were obsolete. Diagram shows how receiver-controller resets supply air temperature based on solar compensated outside air temperature. Load programmer contacts close during morning warmup to energize electropneumatic relay. Pneumatic signal from electro-pneumatic relay adjusts receiver-controller set point warmer based on gradual switch adjustment. Presents figure showing breakdown of energy use before and after the energy retrofit. Building temperature control systems used to require constant adjustment to maintain building comfort, but now the controls are all automatic requiring little or no adjustment.
