Subsynchronous resonance (SSR) is a condition of reversible periodic power swings that can result in major changes in generator-shaft torque, which can damage the shaft quickly. Efforts to prevent SSR have taken many forms; here is a discussion of one approach, the NGH system (named for its inventor, N.G. Hingorani). 5 figures.
