The flocculation of effluents from the coal flotation process was investigated. Three polyelectrolytes were tested: poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), polyacryamide (PAA) and a new, cheap, highly active polymer (VPK). The new cationic flocculant, which was derived from styrene, was capable of accelerating the flocculation process, with optimal dose being 2-3 mg/dm/sup 2/. At a given dose VPK was more effective than PAA or PEO.
