Institute developing spill model seeks support
The Danish Hydraulic Institute is seeking industry and government support in its effort to further develop an offshore oil spill model. The institute has been awarded a grant covering about 40% of the development costs. Industry and Danish governmental agencies are expected to contribute the remaining 60%. The project would entail further development of oil spill investigations conducted earlier by the institute in the North Sea and on the West Greenland continental shelf. Investigations already performed by the institute include mathematical modeling, spill trajectory predictions, impact probability evaluations, spill degradation, field surveys and wind and current mapping. The primary emphasis of the study is to assist operators in developing contingency plans and, in the event of a spill, forecast the precise direction of the slick.
