After four years of research and field installations, it has now been shown that the most reasonable solution to heat, abrasion and cracking problems associated with cat cracker components can best be reached using amorphous silica aggregate castables. Incorporating the traditional cement-based system established in 50% and 90% alumina refractory castables, low K-factor amorphous silica castables provide abrasion-resistant one-component linings while reducing heat loss by 20 to 25%. Above-average shock and crack resistance, which can minimize coke penetration, will also result from linings cast or gunned with this latest generation of amorphous silica castables.
