Although considerable research has been, and continues to be conducted on the use of composites for crash energy management, there is limited work in the areas of true hybrid construction, and the use of actual structural elements (rather than simple tubes). In this paper we present the results of a study on the progressive crush characteristics of preforms that use a minimum of two different materials and which are shaped in the form of a set of flange connected tubes. The effect of hybridization and geometry is discussed and it is shown that the approach affords the potential for tailored damage mechanisms the value-added use of recyclate.
