Title: Ecological studies on the revegetation process of surface coal Mined areas in North Dakota. 7. Mineral analysis of plants grown on spoils and topsoils. Final report Aug 75-Jun 82

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5749569

Plant samples collected from the mined sites of Beulah, Center and Zap and the test sites of North Beulah I, North Beulah II, South Beulah and Center were analyzed for their nutrient concentrations. The vegetation from the mined areas generally showed lower concentrations of Na, P and Cu and failed to meet the nutritional requirements for beef cattle as defined by National Research Council. The concentrations of Ca, Mg, Na, Fe, Cu and N in grasses were significantly higher on topsoil than at slack amended spoil at Center test site. The data presented in this report act only as an indication of between-treatment and between-species differences in tissue composition of plants harvested in mid-summer season. Since none of the nutrients analyzed were found toxic, the cattle can safely feed on the mined land vegetation.
