Evaluation of peat as a utility boiler fuel
Abstract
The technical feasibility of peat harvesting and direct combustion has been confirmed based on European experience and successful development work by First Colony Farms, Inc. in North Carolina. The environmental acceptability of a large-scale peat harvesting operation must be confirmed on a case basis; however, control measures are available at a price to mitigate most potential impacts. The major open question regarding peat utilization for steam and power generation is one of economics. An approach to evaluating the economic feasibility of peat fuel has been described in this paper. Based on the preliminary results of an EPRI study for the electric utility industry, it appears that peat can compete favorably with coal in situations where there is no nearby coal supply and the peat supply is close to the power plant.
