Abstract

R.J. Industries, Inc. under the DOE Appropriate Technology Program, designed, installed, and monitored a side stream water filtration system on a typical cooling tower arrangement supplying condenser water to refrigerated chilled water units. All of the components utilized in the filter system were readily available. (The actual filter unit was designed to maintain the clarity and overall quality of swimming pool water). R.J. Industries modified the flow characteristics and adapted the hardware for use with a cooling tower system. The application of existing equipment in a new technology proved to be a practical, cost effective approach for maintaining the quality of cooling tower water.

The 24-story, 419,000 ft{sup 2} (38,925 m{sup 2}) office tower in downtown Salt Lake City was completed in 1991 and was 97 % occupied by late 1993. The Magma Cooling Tower (MCT) process utilizes a falling film heat exchanger integrated into an induced draft cooling tower to evaporate wastewater. A hot water source such as return cooling water (90/sup 0/F to 110/sup 0/F) provides the energy for evaporation. Water quality control is maintained by removing potential scaling constituents to make concentration of the wastewater possible without scaling heat transfer surfaces. At Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), the two main cooling tower systems (central and northwest) were upgraded during the summer of 1997 to reduce the generation of hazardous waste. In 1996, these two tower systems generated approximately 135,400 lbs (61,400 kg) of hazardous sludge, which is more than 90 percent of the hazardous waste for the site annually. At both, wet decks (cascade reservoirs) were covered to block sunlight.
