PENN ENGINEERING of Orange, Texas, extending a concept previously applied to a drilling tender, has designed a pair of economical new drillships that will enlarge the weather window for drilling in many severe environments. Two factors make this possible: an external motion suppression system that reduces roll by as much as 90% and heave by as much as 40%, and A central mooring system that makes it possible to turn the vessel 90/sup 0/ in either direction to head into the seas.
