Title: Flute instability in an open min B system

Abstract

In a confinement system with an average min B, in part of which the particles undergo an unfavorable magnetic drift, the familiar MHD flute waves may be accompanied by some natural flute waves with an azimuthal phase velocity on the order of or smaller than the magnetic drift velocity of the ions in the region of favorable curvature. This wave branch is not described in the MHD approximation; it arises in the two-fluid model. These waves have a negative energy and may thus be excited by dissipative effects.
