Premix, an experimental approach to investigate the mixing behaviour of a hot melt being poured into water
- Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe (Germany)
This paper describes the mixing of a hot alumina melt poured into water. The main goals of the tests are to describe the phenomena of premixing, to supply data for code development, and to find out whether an inherent limit exists for the masses involved in premixing and, consequently, for the thermal energy that can be converted into mechanical work. Eleven tests were performed by varying the mass of alumina melt, number of melt release nozzles, type of melt release, height of fall in steam atmosphere, temperature of the water, and depth of the water. Debris was examined after the tests to determine the size fractions, structure, density, chemical and phase composition, and liquidus temperature. The passage of the melt stream in the water formed a funnel-shaped interaction region in which steam became the continuous phase. Tests with a smaller water depth show that melt can pass a distance of 0.5 m in the water pool while being only partly fragmented and solidified. These results indicate the existence of an inherent upper limit for the melt masses than can be coarsely mixed. The test results cannot be directly transferred to reactor conditions; however, they are well suited for code validation. 5 refs., 8 figs., 1 tab.
