Critical temperature analysis for a hemispherical charge of a binary explosive
Abstract
The adiabatic induction period for a hemispherical charge of a binary explosive (13.9 wt % pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) and 86.1 wt % plastic bonded explosive (PBX9407)) enclosed in an aluminum/ceramic housing was measured by conventional cook-off tests over the temperature range of 150 to 250{degree}C. Simulated adiabatic induction time curves for an intimate mixture of PETN and PBX9407 were recorded with accelerating rate calorimetry (ARC). Apparent heat-transfer coefficients approximating conductive and convective modes of heat-transfer were calculated from cooling curves recorded for the charge housing loaded with mock explosive powder (diphenyl silane diol) and water, respectively. Predicted critical temperatures based on models utilizing Semenov and Frank-Kamenetskii boundary constraints were in good agreement with experimental results determined from the cook-off test. 6 refs., 5 figs., 3 tabs.
