Title: Event-based quality criteria training

Abstract

Senior managers of a large nuclear utility recognized the need to improve the familiarity of both line and oversight staff with beneficial safety, quality, and stewardship principles expressed in Ref. 1. They recognized that the Ref. 1 criteria, although containing profound wisdom, do not readily capture the attention of user populations. They recognized the dilemma that on one hand, a better understanding of these principles was needed and on the other hand, the criteria themselves lack elements of drama and attractiveness. They therefore decided to sponsor development of an event-based quality criteria training program that would involve the trainees in dynamic sessions and would be based on dramatic events that could have been prevented or made less consequential by the application of the safety, quality, and stewardship principles in Ref. 1.
