Cooperatives play a vital role in providing petroleum products to U.S. farms. They provide services at all related levels of oil production, including exploration, crude oil, and natural gas production, refining and processing, wholesale and retail distribution, and related operations. Farmers in the United States spend about $1 of every $13 on production supplies and equipment for petroleum products. In 1982, they bought about 3.5 billion gallons of liquid fuel for production. For lubricating oil, grease, and liquified fuel, farmers spend about $7.7 billion.
