The lecture first traces the history of materials 1) to show the global geographic scope in which materials and society have interacted, and 2) to emphasize the antigravity of materials as such and their impact on society as it existed in different eras. He then discusses the beginnings of materials science and engineering, after which he briefly addresses national materials issues - pointing out that, in spite of various crises throughout this century, it is only in the past decade or so that Congress has given this problem the serious attention it deserves. Next, the economic impacts of materials in the US economy - about 8% of the GNP - and the benefits to employment, scale of living, and social comforts are recounted. Finally, the role of the federal government in the interplay between materials and society is addressed.
