The mechanistic implications of {sup 14}C tracer studies will be described. The time scale with {sup 14}C the tracer in a continuous stirred reactor is long enough that it resembles the faster kinetic transient studies using {sup 13}C labeled molecules which Professor Bennett helped establish and contributed pioneering studies. In addition to the mechanistic considerations, a comparison will be made of the advantages and disadvantages of these two carbon isotopes in elucidating reaction pathways in studies of heterogeneous catalysis.
