Risks dominate counter argument to environmental groups
The French nuclear industry, convening to discuss the health risks of various energy systems, is taking the initiative against environmentalists by comparing relative rather than absolute risks and by pointing out that public anxiety can divert technical resources into areas where the risks are limited. Distrust of nuclear energy, which the public does not understand, comes into conflict with the public's desire for energy-intensive comforts and products. The conference papers explored the nature of risk perception and acceptance in the areas of waste disposal and accident probabilities. The long-term impacts of energy production and consumption are compared in terms of death causes and annual days lost from work. 9 tables. (DCK)
