Effect of nitriding temperature in a glow discharge on the thickness and composition of the nitride zone

A study was made of the effect of nitriding temperature in pure ammonia and in carbon-containing plasmas of a glow discharge on the thickness and composition of the nitride zone on steels 18KhGT, 45, 20Kh, 40Kh, and 38KhMYuA. The thickness of the nitride zone was determined metallographically and by the x-ray method. Analysis of the results of these studies showed that the dependence of nitride layer thickness and composition on nitriding temperature under glow discharge conditions differs markedly from similar dependences obtained with furnace nitriding.
