Title: Reclamation equipment performance characteristics in the Illinois coal basin

Abstract

Land reclamation and its impact on mining operations has been steadily increasing in the US for the past one decade. This impact is probably most evident in the Illinois coal basin surface mines where prime agricultural lands are involved. Under the sponsorship of the US Bureau of Mines, the authors conducted a survey of the land reclamation equipment and their performance characteristics in the Illinois coal basin. Fifteen mines were visited in Illinois, Indiana and Western Kentucky, and data on mechanical availability, equipment utilization, common maintenance problems and breakdowns, equipment performance and total dozer and scraper capacities were obtained. The data were analyzed statistically to develop meaningful relationships for mine planning and design.
