Enthalpy of formation of amorphous silica
In calculating the formation heat of organosilicon compounds from the results of their combustion heat on oxygen it is necessary to have a reliable value of the standard formation heat of hydrated silica. This paper, in trying to assess this property, examines the following factors: the character of the surface, the structure and specific concentration of surface silicon hydroxide groups, and the energy of its wetting with water. Combustion experiments are carried out and described. It is concluded that the formation heat of amorphous silica is not a constant value and is determined by the character of its surface and degree of hydration. For this reason, in the combustion of organosilicon compounds, the formation heat of silica should be determined experimentally.
