Title: Geophysical investigations of the Western Ohio-Indiana region. Annual report, October 1984-September 1985. Volume 4

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5321013

Earthquake activity in the Western Ohio - Indiana region has been monitored with a precision seismograph network consisting of nine stations located in west-central Ohio and four stations sited in Indiana. The nine Ohio stations have been upgraded by the replacement of the geophones and VCO/amplifier packages with new, and more reliable components. Seven local and near-regional earthquakes have been recorded and located during this report period, ranging in magnitude from 1.4 to 3.0 m/sub bLg/. Of the seven events, four occurred in western Ohio, and three were located well outside the array, one near Chicago, Illinois, one in northern Kentucky, and one in western Pennsylvania. The event which occurred near Chicago, Illinois, on 9 September 1985 was felt; however, only minor damage was reported. Teleseismic P-wave arrival and residual tables have been updated to include newly acquired data. The results are substantially the same as in previous years. Preliminary results have been obtained from data acquired during a refraction experiment in the summer of 1984. The data indicates an apparent velocity of 6.76 km/sec for the refracted P arrivals from the basement and an apparent velocity of 8.27 km/sec for the Pn arrivals. An apparent velocity of 3.57 km/sec was also interpreted from the Lg arrival times.
