Progress is reported in achieving the following objectives: (1) to molecularly define the transposition event in maize mtDNA that is concomitant with the cytoplasmic reversion of S-type cytoplasmically male sterile to fertile plants, and (2) to seek altered expression of mtDNA measured as altered transcription of RNA from transposed mtDNA sequences in maize.
