A number of problems facing the petrochemical industry are discussed: low demand, overcapacity, reduced profit margins, and international competition. It is suggested that survival may depend on the ability of the industry to make its operations more cost-effective. Basic research must be continued and information technologies applied. Environmental, governmental and safety concerns must be considered and integrated into problem-solving techniques. (JMT)
