Title: Two-dimensional lake circulation modeling system: programs to compute particle trajectories and the motion of dissolved substances. Technical memo

Abstract

This report documents two computer programs that use currents from numerical lake circulation models to predict the motion of particles and dissolved substances. Movement of particles in the water is related to the vertically averaged current and to a percentage of the surface wind. Dissolved substances are assumed to be vertically mixed and thus to move only with the current. The user must provide bathymetric data, initial conditions, currents, winds, and a subroutine to generate output. One of the more practical applications of lake and ocean circulation models is the prediction of drifting object trajectories for search and rescue operations or oil and chemical spill cleanup.
