Production using steam injection moves offshore in California field
Aminoil USA Inc. is initiating what is believed to be the oil industry's first effort to stimulate oil production with steam injection from a domestic offshore platform in California. It is part of a campaign to revitalize the Huntington Beach field, a 1920 discovery 35 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles. Aminoil's present production from the field is approximately 20,800 bpd, including approximately 19,000 bpd from the offshore portion of the field. The company hopes to boost daily production to 28,000 bpd by 1988. Aminoil and predecessor companies have been operating the Huntington Beach field since the late 1930s, producing nearly 500 million bbl of oil over that period. An equivalent amount may still remain in the ground. Aminoil is undertaking the test program, including offshore steam injection, to determine how much of that volume may be economically and technically recovered.
