Title: Energy-efficient community-development techniques: five large-scale case-study projects from US Department of Energy's Site and Neighborhood Design (SAND) Program - Phase I

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5230046

State-of-the-art reviews for five site-specific case studies in the Site and Neighborhood Design (SAND) program are presented. The sites chosen for the demonstration program include Burke Center and Greenbrier, Virginia; Radisson, New York; Shenandoah, Georgia, and the Woodlands, Texas. The program encompasses a variety of climates, site conditions, development objectives, building costs, and state and local regulations. The study identified the manner in which increased energy efficiency can be incorporated into project design and development. The projects discussed used a variety of energy-efficient approaches, including passive techniques, active systems such as water source heat pumps or solar hot water collectors, and community systems such as biomass cogeneration plants and central solar facilities. Detailed descriptions of the development of the communities are presented. (MCW)
