Title: Hubble probes the plasma universe

Journal Article · · Aerospace America; (United States)
OSTI ID:5224296

Some of the early Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations are reviewed. Much of the new work shows the way plasmas and their attendant currents and magnetic fields assist in shaping the lives of stars. Within the solar system, HST documented on Saturn a rare giant storm that occurs only once during the Saturnian year. A program of regular monitoring of the climate on Mars has begun, with Hubble's ability to view in the UV allowing scientists to measure changes in the ozone and water content of the Martian atmosphere. Additional observations described include the R-Aquarii symbiotic star, the massive star Melnick 42 in the LMC, and the stellar winds and jets that emerge from stars.
