In 1972, at the height of the environmental movement, the United Nations established the UN Environment Program (UNEP), through which to promote greater environmental awareness, better development management, and increased prosperity among member nations. The following six broad areas of concern were designated: human health and settlements, terrestrial ecosystems, environment and development, oceans, energy, and natural disasters. Reduction in pollution in the Mediterranean as part of the Regional Seas Program is given as an example of progress that has been made under UNEP's coordination and guidance. Limited successes in other areas of concern, including desertification are discussed. Challenges facing UNEP, primarily funding, are described. (JGB)
