Operation Dominic, Christmas series. Project Officers report. Project 7. 3. Microwave attenuation
Technical Report

OSTI ID:5182212
This report describes the results of measurements of attenuation of radar signals made during the low-altitude nuclear tests of Operation Dominic. Two types of experiments were conducted, measurement of returns from beacon-equipped aircraft flying behind the fireball, and measurement of energy reradiated by passive reflectors arranged in an array beyond the fireball. The immediate conclusion from examining the results of the aircraft experiment is that significant attenuation does exist at S-band for considerable time after a low-altitude explosion, but the attenuation is limited to the fireball region.
