Optical spectra of Pa/sup 4 +/ diluted in ThCl/sub 4/ single crystals

Absorption and emission spectra of Pa/sup 4 +/ in ThCl/sub 4/ were recorded at different temperatures varying from 4.2 to 300 K. The seven-crystal field states were measured experimentally and fitted to the spin-orbit and crystal field parameters resulting from D/sub 2d/ symmetry. The obtained parameter values (in cm/sup -1/) are F/sup 0/ = 3658, xi = 1525, B/sup 2//sub 0/ = -1373, B/sup 4//sub 0/ = 1725, B/sup 4//sub 4/ = -2487, B/sup 6//sub 0/ = -2290, and B/sup 6//sub 4/ = -53. Emission occuring at 4915 and 4078 cm/sup -1/ was used to determine the /sup 2/F/sub 5/2/ low lying levels.
