Toughening of a particulate-reinforced/ceramic-matrix composite. Technical report
Abstract
The toughening mechanism of particulate-reinforced/ceramic-matrix composites was attributed to the thermal residual-stress field induced by the differential thermal expansions of the matrix and the particulate when the composite is cooled from the processing to room temperature. The measured increase 77% in toughness in a TiB{sub 2}-particulate/SiC-matrix ceramic composite compared well with the predicted increase of 52%.
