New field procedure improves mud control

Carbonate and bicarbonate ion contamination of water-base drilling muds has long been recognized as a problem. But until now there has been no simple test to determine the presence of these ions. The pH/Pf method described quickly determines ion concentration and specifies the appropriate treatment. 7 refs.
