Production methods have been developed to establish clad piping systems as a practical solution to piping corrosion, maintenance and reliability problems. Clad piping components have been utilized in oil production, in nuclear power plants, and increasingly in the refining industry to take advantage of high alloy cladding materials which are metallurgically bonded to the ID of carbon and alloy steel piping. Installation practices utilize commercially proven fabrication and welding techniques with the added benefit of eliminating preheat and PWHT in most applications. This paper will review case histories of clad piping installations in the refining industry and identify other applications that are ideally suited for clad piping components. The results of a limited survey, reported in this paper, reveal that various forms of clad piping have been used in several different refinery services including hot hydrogen (H{sub 2}/H{sub 2}S service) up to 790 F (420 C). The methods used to make pipe, fittings and prefabricated pipe spools are described.
