Minimizing pitting corrosion of tubulars
- Mitchell Energy Corp., Woodlands, TX (United States)
The pitting corrosion of more than 50 casing samples from eight manufacturers (nine mills) was evaluated using the stray current accelerated test (SCAT) procedure. The quality of mill scale on tubulars casing, tubing, rods, and drill pipe is a major factor affecting pitting rates and tubular life. The data indicates SCAT can help identify areas where corrosion is most likely to occur, corrosion patterns, and relative pitting rates. Although the procedure uses DC to produce corrosion, the conclusions are believed to also be valid for pitting corrosion caused by carbon dioxide, oxygen, bacteria, and possibly hydrogen sulfide, as indicated from comparisons between test samples and failed samples from wells.
