The state of the PLC
Personal computers (PCs) that threatened to {open_quotes}kill{close_quotes} the programmable logic controller (PLC) have helped make them more accessible. PLC vendors are expanding software function sets, improving network communication options, simplifying integration into broader systems, and putting more power into smaller, lower-cost packages. PLCs are also reaping benefits of the growth in batch-process automation a process application in which the PLC`s discrete nature fits well, and in the maturing of computer-based, human-machine interface (MMI) and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) software. Despite ongoing speculation about its demise, PLCs continue to thrive, adapting to new application requirements and market needs. Integration has been a major effort of PLC manufacturers. Many see the dividing line between PLC and DCS systems disappearing.
