Title: A plant bioindicator system for estimating pollution abatement - elucidation of the ultrastructural, physiological, and biochemical basis of sensitivity and tolerance to NO/sub 2/, SO/sub 2/, and O/sub 3/. Final report 1 July 1978-31 December 1981

Abstract

The specific objectives of this research are: (1) to compare the stomatal frequency of two selected eastern white pine, one sensitive and one tolerant to O/sub 3/; (2) to characterize the fine structure of the epicuticular wax on needle surface and to compare the wax structure of the two selected clones; (3) to continue the determination of the relative sensitivity of selected eastern white clones to NO/sub 2/, SO/sub 2/, and O/sub 3/ used singly and in combination; (4) to investigate photosynthetic and respiratory rates of different eastern white pine clones during light and dark conditions as influenced by NO/sub 2/, SO/sub 2/, and O/sub 3/; and (5) to determine the influence of NO/sub 2/, SO/sub 2/, and O/sub 3/ fumigation on needle chlorophyll content. A summary of the most important results is given and papers produced by the participants are listed.
