Two soils were contaminated by petroleum, then allowed to weather for 2 years. The soils were then subjected to bioremediation using static systems, flow through columns, and slurry systems, each with and without nutrient addition. Petroleum in the static system degraded more slowly and less completely, whereas the slurry system was bet. In all systems, the fractions represented by gas chromatograph (GC) elution times from 0 to 10 and 10 to 15 min were rapidly degraded. However, for compounds that eluted at greater than 15 min, the slurry system was superior to the column system and little degradation of these materials was evident in the static units.
