New catalysts will not eliminate older systems
Now that the grandstanding over metallocene catalysi is passing, a clearer--and more positive--picture is emerging of the future for polymers produced with existing technology--and the catalysts used to make them. {open_quotes}Many people think they are just around the corner with metallocenes,{close_quotes} says Sam Pritchard, commercial manager of licensing for BP. {open_quotes}But improvements in traditional technologies will keep raising the entry barrier for metallocene catalyst systems.{close_quotes} He spoke at the fourth annual International Business Forum on Specialty Polyolefins, held late last month in Houston. As a leading licenser of polyolefins technology, BP is designing its new technology as a biomodal drop-in system for existing single-reactor trains--a distinct departure from other polymer companies that are working on monomodal catalysts and dual-reactor production.
