Title: A simple method and its application to predict the cooling curve at the quenching steel part`s center

The hardening response of a given steel to a certain degree is dependent on the quenching process in a quenching medium, which should be monitored and controlled. On the basis of previous work, this paper mainly deals with the prediction of the cooling curve at the center of any steel part, using the cooling curve measured from a test probe (with cylinder or sphere shape and silver or steel construction) in the same quenchant, and the evaluation of the center hardness and structure of a part with the help of its CCT diagram and derived cooling curve. A simple available formula to convert probe`s cooling curve to that at steel part`s center is proposed and as examples some derived cooling curves of steel bars with different diameters in quenchants are given. Quenching experiments were done with 45 (AISI 1045), GCr15 (AISI 52100) and 60Si2Mn (AISI 9260) steel bars or plates and the center hardness and structure of specimens were examined for verification. The results obtained from experiments are concordant on the whole with those from prediction, which shows that the simple method to predict the quenching response of steel may be available in heat treating process.
