The purpose of evacuating the air conditioning system is to reduce system pressure to a point where any moisture contamination will begin to boil or vaporize at normal atmospheric conditions and can be removed from the system with a vacuum pump. In order to accomplish this effectively, the system pressure must be reduced to an extremely deep vacuum. Given the direct relationship between atmospheric pressure and a perfect vacuum, extremely low vacuum readings are read in microns. There are 25,400 microns to one inch of mercury. Figure I illustrates the comparisons of temperature, absolute pressure, inches of mercury and the micron system of measurement.
