False positives from approved methods: Why and what to do
With cleanups costing hundreds of thousands of dollars, it is imperative that one`s data show what is truly present. For the purpose of this presentation the authors will be concentrating on three types of analyses: volatiles, semivolatiles, and metals. For the volatiles they will concentrate on the analysis for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) by EPA method 8020. For the semivolatiles they will concentrate on polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PNAs) by EPA method 8310. The metals discussion will concentrate on the instrumentation used such as Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICPMS), Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption (GFAA), and Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP or ICPOES).
