The design, installation, and operation of an automated control system is described. The system was installed by Stora Power AB in Sweden after an accident damaged the plant. An evaluation found the control system has had a nearly perfect operating record. The HPC 300 control equipment is a distributed system linked via a two-wire local area network, with separate computers for each generating unit, for the water level sensors, for the station, and for the man-machine interface. The control equipment includes turbine governors, autonomous voltage regulators, and synchronizing equipment.
