Restoring your remedial program: The evolution of the solution
- Haley, and Aldrich Inc., Rochester, NY (United States)
Many environmental sites using remedial measures developed in the late 1980s and early 1990s represent significant investments in hardware, operating labor and oversight, which are frequently found to be inadequate means of achieving site remedial goals. Owners are faced with the financial implications of programs failing to reach closure levels -- and even worse -- over their operating period, many technologies have failed to reduce site risks to levels low enough to obtain a modified closure status. In some instances, soil remedies have induced groundwater plumes or caused migration of dissolved-phase constituents to occur. A strong need exists for effective countermeasures and alternative technical approaches to get these projects back on trace. This article discusses a relatively new process in the remediation field -- 2-PHASE Extraction -- that offers an alternative to conventional methods.
